Description
Britain’s Last Roman Hoards: Wealth, Power and Culture in the Fifth Century is a recent collaborative AHRC (UK government-funded) project focusing on economy, society and culture in fifth century Britain through the study of its latest Roman hoards. There is scholarly debate over the hoard deposition dates, which have wider implications for our understanding of the late Roman to early Medieval transition period. The hoards are also a rich source of evidence for the fifth century, collectively totalling tens of thousands of coins, and hundreds of artefacts (mostly jewellery and dining equipment, plus some vessels that were used as hoard containers). The paper presents some key results from the project that help us better understand hoard chronology, the aftermath of Roman state collapse, and Britain’s developing fifth century culture.
